The opening of Shotton Station developments is the culmination of work started as part of the Station Travel Plans Pilot project, undertaken by the Association od Community Rail Partnerships (ATOC)

Shotton is a vital part of the pilot programme. Like many stations on the rail network it is relatively small but plays a crucial role in taking people into more densely populated areas for jobs, business, and leisure trips.  Shotton is of course in Wales, which is important in itself, but it is also on a Community Rail Line and so enables us to tap into the stakeholder work and promotions already carried out by Jamie Sant the Community Rail officer and the Borderlands CRP.

The travel plan work highlighted areas that could be improved and that appeal to the potential railway customer such as:-

  • provision of new departure information screen within the ticket office
  • new cycle facilities,
  • improved pedestrian access between high and low level platforms at Shotton and Hawarden Bridge,
  • Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVM)
  • Installation of new public highway directional signs on the approach roads to Shotton station.
  • Making it easier for the railway users to navigate the multiple pedestrian and cycleway entrance points to the station.
  • Promotion of the station and travel opportunities such the new PLUSBUS integrated ticketing and marketing leaflet Travel to Shotton
  • Improved bus stop information at stops adjacent to the station
  • Installation of a new electronic passenger information screen showing connecting bus services outside the station entrance.

The accomplishments of the travel plan have been achievable thanks to all the stakeholders working in partnership; Flintshire County Council, Borderlands Line Steering Group, Arriva Trains Wales, Arriva North West and Wales, Taith, Network Rail and Sustrans
